The Prince’s Trust chose International Youth Day to release their 2020 Youth Index, supported by L’Oréal Paris, and the report has revealed a clear link between youth unemployment and poor mental health.
The findings show that, even before the coronavirus pandemic, the overall wellbeing of young people in this country had dropped to its lowest ever level in the study’s 11-year history.
This becomes even more negative for those not in education, employment or training (NEET) – 66 per cent of NEET young people ‘always’ or ‘often’ feel anxious.
The findings are even more stark given the current economic crisis – the youth unemployment rate is over three times higher than the rest of the UK rate and rising.
It’s clear that young people need support more than ever before. If you know or meet a young person who is currently facing unemployment, or is worried about their options for the future, tell them we’re waiting for their call or email.
