Covid-19 Emergency Response shifts including supported shopping and dog walking for vulnerable people in the city. Telephone befriending calls.

We are planning to re-open soon  In line with HCC’s stance, we will no longer be delivering recurring emergency food shopping/dog walking shifts as of 1 August.

We have made it clear to the team at the council that we’re happy to take on ‘one-off’ shifts in the next couple of months as people are finding their feet and accessing alternative support. We’re looking for ways that we can continue telephone befriending more in line with our social action work and the existing Chatty Hull project. We will be continuing our social action work and citywide volunteering activity in line with the reopening of venues and events in the city.

Our volunteers support anyone who finds themselves vulnerable while using Hull city centre’s night time economy. Volunteer “angels” operate every Friday and Saturday night and also on Bank Holidays and special events, addressing any excess alcohol/drug taking incidences and to lessen the need for the emergency services to attend the scene. This takes many forms such as diffusing conflict, contacting parents, carers or relatives to collect people in difficulty, arranging for taxis to assist patrons in getting home safely and off the streets where they could fall victim to crime; administering basic first aid, re-hydration with bottles of water, providing flip-flops to prevent foot injuries and removing glasses and bottles from pavements that may cause harm or become potential weapons.

Then we will start the one to one’s by appointment and lastly, the training, workshops and ultimately the drop ins. Timescales for this has not yet been agreed.
