Creating The Past: Cultural Programming Inspired By Heritage In Hull UK City Of Culture

March 13 @ 1:30 pm - 4:00 pm

Three years ago the National Lottery Heritage Fund decided to invest £3million in a bold new venture with Hull UK City of Culture 2017 – a wide-ranging programme of creative activity to bring the diverse heritage of Hull to the fore during the City of Culture year and to engage a wide range of people with that heritage.

Taking a completely new approach, the partnership set out to infuse heritage narratives broadly throughout the artistic programme; to use heritage as a source of inspiration for artists; and to employ the arts as a means to increase participation in heritage. One in two of the year’s artistic commissions was inspired by heritage and 93% of audiences felt that using arts-based approaches to present heritage made it more interesting. A new report sets out the results of this unique year-long, strategic and place-based approach to exploring and engaging people with heritage. It raises the question of how the fusion of arts and heritage might influence future policy and practice, and what this could mean for the arts, for heritage and for our towns and cities.

The Culture Place and Policy Institute invite you to join them in the debate as they launch the report.

The seminar will combine the presentation of key outcomes from the National Lottery Heritage Fund investment with insights from those involved in the project. The event will conclude with a panel discussion with contributions from artists, heritage practitioners, academics and funders about the benefits and challenges of taking a creative approach to exploring and sharing our heritage.
